Kelvin & Kathy

Where do we start?

Kelvin & Kathy Coleman have been involved with music since very young ages, both have a love of country music which has consumed a large portion of their married lives together. They met each other at a country music Hoedown a while back at a pub in the Hunter Valley, the event was held to raise money to assist a local charity and they have been together ever since. It is a wonderful thing to share a love of music with the one you love!

Kelvin started off as a drummer and backed many well known artists, and travelled around NSW on various professional country tours. He also recorded many drumming tracks for Albums of Artists in the Newcastle region over the years, & taught drums to many up & coming young drummers.

Kathy started off doing guest spots around the Newcastle regions clubs, pubs & charity events, she won many trophies whilst on the talent quest circuit and gained invaluable experience in the process. Then she met Kelvin!

Then came the beginning of many country bands "Rawhide" being one of the most successful throughout the Newcastle area. Hard work, lots of fun, meeting heaps of wonderful people & thoroughly enjoying the music and appreciating the joy they could give to other people through their love of music.

As time went on, bands & big auditoriums were no longer the flavour of the month & duo's started popping up everywhere, they decided that a change was what they needed as well. So Kathy taught Kelvin how to play the guitar and she learnt how to play bass and so was the end to the band days, and they were off in a new direction just the two of them.

As the duo called "Double Deal" they have entertained many people at Clubs throughout the Hunter Valley as well as Tocal Field Days & Steamfest in Maitland. They also joined Miss Kim & Big Dog at wonderful shows at the 4 Wheel Drive & Camping expo's at Maitland & the Central Coast over many years. They were the resident band at the "Old Texas Ranch" for 7 years which they thoroughly enjoyed with many customers returning year after year to see them again.

That was 4 years ago, they needed to have a bit of rest & relaxation after all the hard work and wanted to do a bit of travelling overseas. The Country Music City of Nashville was calling & they just had to go & see what it was all about, what a trip! They stayed at the Opryland Hotel "WOW", went to the Grand Old Opry and saw Porter Wagner, Dierks Bentley & Julia Roberts. They visited the Wild Horse Saloon & was serenaded on the bus by their tour guide Jack, who also played the harmonica while he was driving them around!

Memphis was also on their trip, it was wonderful to visit Graceland and to see Elvis's Gold records, they take up a building on their own, it was amazing. Their next stop was Dollywood in Pigeon Forge Tennessee, which Kathy couldn't wait to get to as this is Dolly Parton land, it was a very special time for her. Las Vegas was calling and the Shepler Country Store which they both went bananas in & had to buy two extra suitcases to bring all the stuff home, but their children loved them for it. They saw many shows in Las Vegas including an intimate concert with "Ricky Van Shelton" he has to have the best voice in the business, it was magical & something they will never forget. Fort Worth Texas has certainly left an impression on them as this is where they experienced the old west, down in the Stockyard Area with cattle droves through the cobblestone Streets & the biggest Honky Tonk in the world known as "Billy Bobs". Kelvin rode a few bucking bulls (mechanical of course, he leaves the real ones to Mat) they saw a lot of wonderful entertainment which has spurred them on again to get out there and do what they do best.

Kelvin & Kathy have been performing the Buckin' Country Show at Buttai Barn near Newcastle/Maitland for the past 18 months every Saturday night.

They are members of the Country Music Association of Australia & also Tamworth Songwriters Association. Kathy has developed a love of songwriting over the last 3 years after attending a songwriting workshop in Tamworth where Allan Caswell was the tutor, it certainly was a magical day.  Kathy gained a Finalist spot in the Amateur Contemporary section of the National Songwriting Contest 2009 with one of her songs called "One Piece at a Time". Kathy also attended the "Jaws 2009" workshop in January 2009 with Renee Grant-Williams, Karin Paparelli, Bill DiLuigi & Gary Tally from Nashville.

Kathy has recently completed recording her debut album "Waitin' on a Good Man" the album is full of original songs written by Kathy & was released on the 22nd November 2009 in time for Christmas.
